Nathan,

Yes, it really can be true.  If you don't turn the shutter button to the
off position, you will go through batteries with devastating rapidity.  I
learned that to my chagrin last Summer in Honduras where there were no
batteries to be had for the M6TTL.  None.  Fortunately, I had my M5 with
me, so I didn't lose metering.  But, it's a good thing I didn't need flash
on that trip.  Anyway, definitely turn it off.  This is about the only
thing I don't like about the M6TTL.  Even now, I don't always remember to
turn the button to off.  Fortunately, I remember enough that I don't run
through batteries every six weeks anymore.  Another tip:  always carry
spare batteries with you.
