This whole archiving business seems a bit overstated to me.

Storage space is incredibly cheap and easy to switch between media. For
instance, how much does a not particularly fast 100 Gb hard drive cost? Or
two 50's? That's storage for over 3000 tiffs at 2700 dpi. Buy two for
redundancy and just transfer the whole lot to another computer over a
network when you need to upgrade your hardware.

3000 images is a large archive, if the images are worth preserving! I'm
looking forward to having that many worthy images one day.

And you can always make CD backups, which is a bit more time consuming, but
pretty long lived.

Use lossless jpg compression and I think you've got a valid archive for
quite a while.

Si didgeridoodital looks like quite a valid option even now. At least to
this non-geek.
