I would also suggest that you get in writing who will be taking the
photographs.  If you decide that you like the style and are going to go with
a particular photographer, make it clear that he won't be sending an
assistant.

My wedding photos came out ok.  Just ok.  I wasn't a happy camper that he
told us at the last minute that his assistant would be doing most of them.
You have to start sometime...but not at *my* wedding.  Well, actually at my
wedding, as it turned out.  :)

If I had it all to do over, I'd stay away from portrait/wedding
photographers and go with a commercial photog, like Mark says.  Or go with
somebody like B.D. ( http://www.a-day-in-our-life.com/ ).  Better
yet...elope and use the money to buy a new lens!  :)
