Uh ... Planet Earth to Mark? Observation Balloons were stationed three to
ten miles behind the lines, far outside the range of a sniper.
But, consider America's first ace, Frank Luke, the "balloon buster". He
was the original Steve McQueen, a tough guy who lived hard and died even
harder.
