I cannot believe that so many Leica aficionados could not know the identity
of this useful item.

Look closer, it is obviously a UV FILTER for the Leica Meter. Once attached
it prevents ultraviolet light from being measured by the antiquated selenium
meters. As you well know, UV is an insidious phenomenon that can ruin a
LUGer's day.
Of course, a great secondary function of the item - but just as important -
is to protect the meter in case of a fall.
