That's the infra-red receiver which you plonk on the M2/M2 to activate the
shutter to take self portraits. Works up to a distance of 50 feet. Leica
was the first in the world to have this innovation and the device was
stolen by a rival company which promptly copied and patented it. That's why
Leica has since been unable to bring out another similar remote shutter
activation till date.
