This may have been mentioned before, but for a given focus
distance and aperture, a 35mm lens will likely give the appearance
of greater sharpness because of its greater depth of field.

For example, at a focus distance of 5m at f/8, a 50mm will have a
DoF of about 6m, while the DoF of a 35mm will be (practically)
infinite.

I seldom stop the lenses down too much, as most of my snapping is in pretty
light-challenged conditions. Anyway, interesting to see how many people
feel there is a difference.
As for Henning's little jibe about world domination, when we're in charge
(it's a Hegelian process, historical inevitability, matey, so watch your
step, it's all going into the big black book) words will be spelt the way
_we_ want them to be. As Humpty Dumpty said, the question is "Who is to be
Master".
