Let's not also forget that not all of the KGB was involved with
repression. I don't know what percentage was involved in what but a lot
of KGB officers were just intelligence operatives who did essentially
the same thing as any other country's intelligence agency - ran spies
and analysed information for policymakers. By all accounts the KGB was
extrememly professional and successful in this and I imagine quite a lot
of these people are still working for the RVS (which, if memory serves,
is the agency which succeeded the KGB).
