To bring this back somewhat into the realm of photography, there was a book
recently published called something like, "The Commissar is Missing", about
how Stalinist era photo retouchers modified official Party photographs to
reflect current status of part members etc. The best is one that appears
on the cover. It is the first in a series of photographs depicting Stalin,
surrounded by about half a dozen close party officials. One by one, these
officials start dissapearing from subsequent photographs, until the final
image shows just Stalin, all by himself. It would be laughable, except
for the fate of the people removed from these photographs. I suspect that
they were removed from a bit more than just the photographs ;-).
