Okay-
I may be missing something, but why all the razzing on ole Bill? Gates did
what all of us wish they could do- come up with an idea, run with it all the
way to the bank, and become 'a contender'!
I have seen interviews where he is both charming and unassuming, and those
where he comes across as a nerdy, childish jerk, but then again, we've all
acted badly at one time or another. Monopoly? Well, when I saw a recent
commercial where Oracle claimed to have 96% of the internet commerce
database market, I cringed- I said to the screen ( I tend to talk to m'self
at this age!) - "You guys better watch it! Look what happened to Bill, and
he only had 65% of the Operating System Market!"
If he buys up these images, then is it all his fault? who sold them out to
begin with? Perhaps buying them all will not matter in a few years when you
can digitally generate any image you want....technology moves rapidly, and I
know that even if Jim Brick claims film will not be obsolete, it is being
replaced in many fields with CCD images- from Astronomy to Zoo picutres! I
imagine that when Henry Ford cornered the rubber market to assure a constant
supply of tyre for his model "T"s that there was some concern, but
technology moved on, so too with the guy that thought he had cornered the
market in buggy whips!
I have better things to worry about! We all do! Everyone who shuddered to
think of what might have happened when the 'millennium' turned- which
actually won't happen until the end of this year, that they forgot that Homo
Sapiens Sapiens had survived most of the last thirty thousand years eating
what he got with a stick and string, and a handful of rocks. Most of what we
take for granted now is the result of man's efforts in the last few
centuries, and I don't think in the long run that a man like Bill Gates, or
Bill Clinton will make all that much difference in what we can and will
become! Leica APS cameras? Hell, they could make blenders and coffee pots
for all I care,. If they have to do it to survive, then fine. Just think,
"Six hundred years from now, what the Hell difference will it make?"
