Tina,

I second Doug's recommendation of the 400mm Telyt. I bought one of those too,
and while it does not get a tremendous amount of use, the investment is modest,
so it is OK. Doug is a master at handholding it with the shoulder stock (see
the bird photos on his web site); I must admit I prefer a monopod. But either
way, it is a great lens.
