Ted,

Here's how it is: some folks like to use their toys and some folks gotta know how & why it works before they feel comfortable using it. My two daughters are perfect examples.

The older one doesn't give a rat's rear end about ANYTHING technical and she's much happier with an auto-everything P&S while my little one had to know everything about how a focal-plane shutter works, the relationship between focal length, image size and angle of view, the mechanics of how an SLR's mirror gets out of the way before the shutter opens, the relationship between focal length and appropriate shutter speeds when the camera's not on a tripod, how the meter works, depth of field, plane of focus, how a pentaprism works ... it goes on and on. Try explaining all that to a 7-year-old. At least she didn't ask how glass bends light and why so many elements are needed in the lens.

She's 12 now, and she'd rather use the family Nikon FG in manual mode with 55 Micro than a P&S, and she'd much rather use the R4sP with 60 macro instead of the FG. Auto-focus? Never!

Ted, I'm not saying you ought to be using a P&S 'cuz I've seen a few of your photos and I know you use your Leicas to their fullest potential, but some people just gotta know how it all works.

BTW several of Kelsey's photos from school field trips were in the school yearbook last year; all the other yearbook photos were made by adults. She understands the camera, then she uses it.
