Hi Dave,

     And thanks for sharing your trip in the Sierras.  You are correct about
needing UV filters at high altitudes!  Also, instead of hauling a tripod,
have you considered a clamp?  I've got two of the Rowi ones.  They can be
used as a clamp; but more importantly they are supplied with a small 
WOOD screw.  This screw is "clamped"  by the clamp; it can then be driven
into wood such as trees.
