Leica has also announced increased spending on aspherical technology for use in the production of industrial laser systems, endoscopes, and lithographic systems. Asperical lenses are shaped non-spherically and enable the construction of photographic lenses that are more compact and achieve a better overall optical performance. Meanwhile, Ralf Coenen, former head of the Photo and Film Lenses Business Division at the Carl Zeiss Group, has been appointed to head up Leica's engineering and logistics.
