New York really is MUCH safer than it used to be; that said, you still have 
to use common sense. I would not visit Central Park after dark, for example.  
May I suggest Broadway between Houston St. and Canal St. for Human Traffic? 
As I've said before on the LUG, it's quite a cast of characters. The weekend 
is best.
