I auctioned off a bunch of rare classical records a while back, and in
most of the auctions three people (from very different corners of the
country) were bidding actively against each other. The high "fetch" was
a single Mercuty Living Presence disk that went for $256. A dealer had
offered me $30 for it.

eBay is a sword that cuts both ways--it makes things accessible to you
as a buyer from all over, but it also increases the potential
competition from other buyers.
