This sounds like a great technique, I often use a large softbox in combination with a grid spot on the face for a bit of punch but this sounds like it would give a soft overall light with some sparkle in the eyes, similar to a balanced daylight exposure with some on camera flash to fill. Back on the flash on camera theme I often use it at full power to get as small an aperture as possible but overexpose the daylight a stop or so and with a one second exposure throw in some camera movement, keeps things softer with no black tunnel effect and despite being a bit hit and miss can generate some interesting images.
