I don't see how any of these new built-in shades would protect in the case
of impact. My 50 Summicron, which is the newer type with built-in hood, is a
great lens but the hood collapses back way too easy. I feel much better with
my Dual Range Summicron fitted with the 12585 hood.

Basically any situation which illuminates the front of the lens directly
when the light source is out of frame is going to flare to some extent, even
but you may be able to flag it off. When the light source is *in* frame you
can't flag, and you are relying on the quality of the optics and the lack of
a filter!!
