The verbal evaluation is maybe based on "how much the lens manufacturer advertises in Pop Photo" because there´s usually nothing negative but by looking at the tables you get a quite accurate assessment of different lenses. I have one or two personal experiences of somes lenses (Sigma) that confirm this but they belong to a different list. All the best!
