When I was teaching in the university in Leiden, attempting to master at least a basic level of walk-about Dutch, my friends and colleagues made merciless fun of me. "Why bother?" they'd say. "*You're* not Dutch. Speak English." And then there's the absolutely occult "austjeblieft" (sic), which only the Dutch and the Illuminati know when to use properly.
