Robert,

I believe what you saw was a base plate for a Leica
MD.  The MD camera was designed for
laboratory/technical use.  The block with slot allowed
a a recording strip to be slipped into the camera for
recording information about what was being
photographed.  You don't happen to recall where you
saw it and how much they wanted for it do you?  I have
an MD with standard baseplate and would like to get
the recording base plate.
