   If you are a really good Grandfather, the R8 would be a great starter
camera.  Hmmm, thinking the bar should be a tad lower?  Something like a K1000
comes to mind.  Not very expensive, works, lenses are just fine etc.  Problem
is with limited visits the camera may be to much for a 8 year old.  Depending
on your budget for this project I would look at something that has Program
mode along with the override for manual, shutter, and/or apeture.  Something
like the Nikon 2000 or the 2020 (the af version) come to mind.  The FA is also
a good bet but those that bought into them when the prices were real high tend
not to want to take a loss.  With the P mode, he can always use it while
waiting for the next lesson. There are many other options, like old range
finders like the Minolta 7S that allow to change shutter or opening.
