Nigel,

Trial before purchasing is far from being always possible. The best that
was ever offered to me here in Brussels was to pass one film through
demo or 2nd hand hardware and shoot in the shop. Hardly testing
conditions. OTOH, I've got to think real hard to remember purchasing
'bad' primes, whatever the maker.

I'm sure the vast majority of buyers rely on a cocktail of magazine
tests, user recommendations, marketing rap and personal pre-conceptions
when buying photo hardware. The Internet, specialised Web sites, Usenet
and groups such as the LUG are great sources, both of information and
intoxication...
