My B&W prints from Adobe Photoshop on the Epson Stylus Photo 700 (same as the EX
but only up to A4 size) are every bit as good as anything I am able to produce in
the traditional darkroom. Now, this may say more about my darkroom printing
skills than about the merits of scanning etc., but I think that, as Tina said,
you should give it a try. You will be pleasantly surprised.
