Handheld incident metering from the sidelines also works well, if you have an
incident meter, as long as you are standing in light that is the same as the
playing field. You may have to raise the meter above your head to keep the
sensor from being shaded by folks standing beside you, and the sensor needs to
be pointing toward the stands behind you rather than pointing at the field.

I find it quicker than trying to figure out compensation with the in-camera
meter.
