It was simple. Most of even the best enlarging lenses of those days had some light fall-off at the edges. Therefore with a perfectly even density negative the edges would print lighter than the central portion. By printing a negative with built-in slight vignetting the enlarging lens problem was turned into an advantage. It compensated for the problem, somewhat. How's that for turning it around? Ed
