If I were his age, I wouldn't appreciate such a visit one bit. The proper thing to do would have been to start a correspondence well in advance of your trip, particularly with a gentleman of HCB's era. In American Photo there is even a photo of his metro card on which he's drawn on his picture to make it even less recognizeable.
