After being taught My thought too. But when the film gets pulled in, and you don't have any easy way to retrieve it, I just slip my thumb's fingernail in-between the felt and rip the thing open. It's much easier than it sounds. I discovered it in a situation of desperation. Some film was already on reels, and I couldn't find the bottle opener and I was on deadline.
