yes, this is pretty much exactly what i've learnt to do. i now glance
at the dial as i bring it to my eye (and generally leave it at 125 when not
in "active use"). 

i press the tip of my fore finger onto the front edge of the dial and i 
have learnt that push will slow the shutter speed and pull will quicken it.

sometimes i get a bit "lost" because my fingertip slips on the dial and 
have to relook....but that's ok.

there's not much else that i'd change about the m6. i bought it because it
is the way it is.

i've got a problem with any suggestions for the m7 that would involve 
batteries and the use thereof. it would be nice if leica merged the MH and
the regular finder into a single unit with a mechanical switch that switched
in a diopter (or whatever, i leave that magic to the engineers !).
