The symptoms this event exhibits are essentially the same as you describe. It is easy to have happen as this is a common storage problem and one wouldn't expect the battery to be mostly dead after just 10-rolls of film. Their explanation might just be a face-saving measure and their way of saying, "the battery was dead, we replaced it." Just a thought.
