Alf, you may be correct; for,  my Leica has no rangefinder,  to which Charlie
previously referred.  However, thanks Charlie:  I took your advise, persisted,
and found the very obscure Elmar Serial #  engraved on the black lens "tube"
at 9:00 o'clock, as already noted.

P.S.  Does the phrase "1938 Leica Standard" sufficiently identify this camera?
