Leon:

It's a Leica Standard (model E, 1938 range: s/n 271.101-271.600).

There are 795 black ones from 1938, and 2.850 chrome ones. The
total production is 13.545 (black), and 13.680 (chrome). The
International Price Guides (Jul 1997) says USD 1.200 (black)
or USD 960 (chrome). The viewer should be "extra" (at least:
looking that way). There is a larger ring/knob below the
shutter wheel with "Ernst Leitz" on it. Some models don't
have "Leica" engraved. Some models have the 35 mm lens viewer,
others the 50 mm lens viewer. Your Elmar (USD 125 to 175) is
from 1938, also.

I would keep both, because of the special, intimate memory, and
because there are not so many Leica Standard anymore.
