Damian, the stud on your M2/M3 is also for attaching the Benser Baseplate.
This was a strange device built by Walther Benser in Germany ( He also made
some rather neat cases for Leica's). The Benser baseplate allowed you to
attach two M-lenses to the bottom of your camera, thus assuring you of major
disaster when you dropped it because it was too heavy. I used to have one and
would put an old Hektor on it and use it as a very large handgrip. The lenses
pointed downward and if you did not drop the whole thing, you tended to leave
a trail of frontcaps, hoods and occasinally a filter or two. There is a new
version of it out that allows you to attach only one lens to the base ( less
costly to drop, at least taking into account inflation and currency
fluctuations).
