Chuck,

Almost any camera you pick-up for the first time will be fiddly. Your brain
and associated neuro-paths need practice to become accomplished. Like
learning the piano. I currently do not have an M camera. I've been using R
cameras since the SL. I always manage to stay one step behind whatever the
current production is. A model has to mature before I will take it on. The
R8 is a fine camera I'm sure, but no winder (now that's fiddly.) I'll wait
until the initial bugs are worked out and the system is more complete
before I switch. I currently use R7's and find them an absolute joy to use.
I do not use eyeglasses so I cannot comment on that. One thing that the R7
has that is never played-up is selectable half shutter speeds. That is one
of the main reasons I left the R4/R6 vintage and went to the R7. When using
Velvia, long lenses, mirror lock-up, and want to bracket AND keep your
depth of field... the half shutter speed is a god-send. If you don't
currently own and use an R camera, the R7 will also be fiddly for awhile.
