I have discussed this with Chatterton who denies there is such a problem.
The conversation was in the fall of 1995.

You are mixing your claims, in any event. LA is possibly the most
smog-ridden city in the US. Does it surprise you that your 'hundreds' of
Leica lenses -- or Nikon, Canon, Zeiss, Pentax, or whatever -- in LA would
need cleaned?

I have seen several hundred Leica lenses at various shows I've worked in
the past three months. Nary a one was 'fogged'. I did not one
fungus-ridden Nikon lens and a broken Zeiss optic.
