I know the camera and lens very well; I agree that maybe a 55 micro is
not the ideal lens for the task, partly because of the short-ish focal
length. You probably would want to install something other than the
standard Nikon Type K viewscreen, with it's split-image center and
microprism surround, as the lens is, after all, only an f/3.5. Among
others, the 105 f/2.5 AI-S is excellent, though I don't recall that it
had any particularly close focusing ability.

The F3 is a lovely camera with a so-so nonstandard flash shoe contact
(maybe consider the F3P, which may also be collectable?) and a fairly
awkward exposure compensation dial typical of the era. Great as a
manual camera, though. Don't overlook the N90s either. Main problem
appears to be battery life.
