William Albert Allard built a career at National Geographic on Kodachrome
and fast lenses. I prefer color myself for low light, but black and white
is wonderful too.

All that is true, I've shot a lot with my 24mm f/2.8 lenses and gotten
great results down to 2.8. But 1.4 lenses offer us more possibilities.
Depends on what we want and how we go about it. I'll wager the new 24mm M
ASPH is going to help redefine avialable light photogrpahy.
