When I was flying home from Zagreb on Friday the 6th, it was via Amsterdam—not the geographically logical route, but it worked with the flights, and it gave me a 10-hour layover in Amsterdam. Normally such a long layover is boring and tiring, but in this case I was quite happy to have it, as it gave me the time to leave the airport, take the train to the centre, and walk around for a few hours, enjoying visiting some of the places that we visited a lot when we lived in the nearby town of Almere from 2003 to 2007. I have been back to Amsterdam after moving to Spain, but the last time was 4 or 5 years ago, so I was quite happy to see the city again. I walked from the central station to the Rijksmuseum, passing some of my familiar spots along the way. I spent a couple of hours visiting the museum and then walked back towards the train station, stopping for a brief visit at the Cat Cabinet, a small museum dedicated to cat-themed art that was a favourite of ours when we lived in the Netherlands. And finally I made my way back to the train and the airport and flew home. This is likely to be my last trip for some months; I have no illusions that the current state of emergency will not be extended beyond the initial 2 weeks, and travel disruptions will undoubtedly continue through the summer.

So come for a walk in Amsterdam:
