I am with Tina on that it does not matter what equipment one use it is about content and passion of the medium called Photography, I still use "Film" sometimes. I hope that does not offend .Cheers from Down Under

Of course we all know that virtually anything can be photographed using the excellent Leica equipment that is around. However I personally think that this group should be for the users of Leica equipment. Know I fully accept that when I offered to leave the group in 2012 because I had switched to Fuji equipment I was invited to stay because my work was such that could be done on a Leica, and I was grateful of the opportunity to do so. However if I were coming new to the group as a Leica user and saw that a large majority of the discussion and work was on equipment that was not Leica, even to the extent that Hasselblad digital has been discussed here, I would question whether it was a ?Leica Users Group? or just a run of the mill photographic group.
To answer your question, the ethos of Leica photography is using Leica equipment to capture the world, mainly in a documentary way.
I value the friendships of people here such as Lluis and Ted amongst others, but I am now finding that most of the posts here have little or no interest to me, and there are so many other places that show work in what I consider the true ethos of Leica, that I have reluctantly decided to move on.

I continue to use only Leica equipment to capture the world in a
documentary way, I hope. To me, this group is my family and I don't care
what equipment you use!!
I am one of the few women here so I guess I should feel like an outsider,
but I don't.
I don't always comment on the photos but I always look at them and
appreciate the sharing. The LUG is more about people than equipment and I
haven't found a photography group with better people ;-)
Leically,
Tina

The sad thing is Tina that I agree with you 100%, and I number you amongst the finest. I just think the group as a whole has lost its way.

As you say we will continue our contact as allways.
For me as Tina says the LUG is like a family place, it is not a problem the
equipment used, it is even interesting see what other World is beyond Leica
when managed from real photographers. Facebook is an i nteresting point but
many said "photographers" are like teenagers Likes collectors, I think that
for meet real photographers and have serious discussions the LUG is better.

There are multiple approaches to leaving a party early.
Among them are:
1. Just slippinng out the door quietly
2. Getting the attention of the host and other guests and explaining to them their shortcomings before making one's exit
3. Making a polite excuse and bidding everyone ?Good evening, and thanks for your company"
Always enjoyed your pictures, Gerry. Be careful going home.

This tool looks to have some substance. For large prints or salvaging a
small part of a frame, the quality of the up-res'd image is definitely
better than I've seen with any other approach.

If you leave Gerry, I also will miss you're presence here. I agree with
Tina, that the LUG and its people are a family, we have all been through
each others ups and downs. But we stick together and help each other out.
Yes many no longer use Leica, but the love of Leica is still there. I,
myself, am down to just my M8 and 5 lenses, but I still use it along with
my Nikons. But when traveling I mostly use the M8, it is still a great
camera in spite of its limitations and being eclipsed by newer bodies, that
unfortunately are out of my ability to own. I hope you stay.

Gerry,
Mostly I lurk, but still I am sorry to see you go. I wish that you would reconsider.
When I was a boy in the 1950?s my Dad gave me his old Rolleicord, and later his old Rolleiflex. The old Rollei is still working fifty years later. My Brother Brian has it now. It was very much a one size fits all camera. It met my needs for years. Later, when I was in college, I got a leica IIIc. That?s when I became addicted. I think that modern technology poses a real challenge for a camera group. There is no longer any such a thing as a one size fits all camera, and if you can not ask your family about something you have on your mind then whom can you ask? And, yes, at the end of the day the LUG is a family. One made up of a group of very talented and interesting individuals.
I do not think that that photography is about equipment. It has to do with light, and images, and composition to be sure. But when all is said and done photography is, like all art, about people and their experiences.
That?s why I stay. The people. I hope that you could see your way clear to doing that, too.
Thanks,
Barney

I've been trying it out all day yesterday and today. I have bought it.
I'm impressed but I cannot figure out why some photos take so long to
process and others don't. I did one this morning that took about 3 minutes
and the next one (same size) has been grinding along for over half an hour!
I'll post results if it ever finishes. Original was made with Leica SL
;-) but I'm taking a tiny crop and blowing it way up.

Great idea on the re-framing to portrait, Philippe! I?ll give that a shot. In the version of the photo that I see the bird?s reflection isn?t cut off. I wonder if SmugMug?s display isn?t doing something nasty on your screen?
I?ll ponder the background issue!

We?ll be going to Venice and then cruising the eastern Med.
Thoughts on Venice? I?d welcome any insights this group could offer.
I?m also pondering gear and vacillate between taking the X-T2 and three lenses to taking my Sony suite. I won?t be moving often, and will always be sleeping on a ship so security is good, but argh!!!! Safari was easy. I?m NOT a seasoned travel photographer.
Of course I have the same difficulty packing?
Thanks for any insights!

I found Tina?s comment insightful simply because I?ve never viewed gender as having any role in photography at all. I think if we all were just initials or screen names devoid of any gender or national significance I?d read the photos and the comments the same way.
I?ve never seen art as a domain for any gender - although point of view can be important to understand how a work might be interpreted. But that threatens to devolve into some form of art criticism and that?s something I literally know nothing about.
Setting all aside: Tina, I know few photographers whose work, thoughts, and opinions matter more to me.
Glad you?re around.
And to Gary: I?m sorry I don?t use a lot of Leica gear any more. I?m not a professional, I don?t make money from my work, and the trade-offs between Leica and Fuji/Sony are such that while I use Leica glass the bodies are simply beyond me.
This group has evolved, especially as the digital revolution has moved us past discussions of film processing, developing, and printing technique. But this is such a friendly place that, even when I don?t have the time to devote to reading all the posts and viewing all the photos, I find it to be a kind of coming home.
I appreciate your sharing and hope, should you take the plunge and sign off, that you find another forum.
Best!

My pure travel kit is a Fuji X100S and a Fuji XT2 with either a 56mm f1.2
or a 90mm f2.
I have found that a Fuji XT2 with an 18-55mm f2.8-4 works very well, too,
as does the X100S by itself.
The key is not to get bogged down with equipment, and the lighter the
better.!
I am going to the Galapagos in November, with my full Nikon wildlife kit,
but the X100S will travel with me to photograph Amsterdam and Quito on the
way. That is all I need!
Cheers

I am with Jayanand on the need to travel light when visiting cities especially. Most of the things you will want to photograph do not require 200 mm lenses. I have recently started using my XE2 rather than the XT2 as my travel camera because it is smaller, lighter and I like the form factor better.
Cheers,

I?m with Jayanand on the focal range - was there some time back with a 24-120 on a FF D700 and that was more than enough.
My current kit contains an XT-2, and the zoom cited by Jayanand. But I think I?d take my (or Alice?s to be honest) 18-135 along as it delivers consistently (the testers may think write differently though) and the combo would offer what many other options may provide in this moist if not wet environment depending on the season, weather sealing.

We stayed on one of the less epensive islands across the laguna. Vaporettos (read water buses) are frequent and safe to ride)
Takes at least three days to get a glimpse of the maze of lanes, and bridges, and more to visit Burano ( a must early morning - too many tourists after ten) and Murano (more frequented and less attractive, but there?s crystal there ?)
More off list if needed

The name of my default tripod which is a made in France:
Gitzo Series 1 Carbon Fiber Mountaineer Sport 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod.
They sold it to me even though I'm not a Mountaineer. Nor do I play one on Television.
I'm found of smooth ground with few bumps or rocks on it. That way I avoid falls and bruises.
I?m in it for the long haul but I'd love that long haul to be on fairly level ground.

But I did just look up "Mountaineer" which is my tripods official name in case it means something I don?t think it does.
It does.
" While some scholars identify mountaineering-related activities as climbing (rock and ice) and trekking up mountains, others are also adding backpacking, hiking, skiing, via ferrata and wilderness activities, and still others state that mountaineering activities also include indoor climbing, sport climbing and bouldering"
" Bouldering" caught my attention. As in "here we go a bouldering"
" Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is performed on small rock formations or artificial rock walls, known as boulders, without the use of ropes or harnesses."
My plan had always been to walk around them. Or take a picture of them. But not be on them.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountaineering
" Hiking in the mountains can also be a simple form of mountaineering when it involves scrambling, or short stretches of the more basic grades of rock climbing, as well as crossing glaciers."
I did some experimental scrambling this morning with a 12.5 inch Swiss Nonstick adding large chucks of mushrooms and sliced mini spuds then spent some time looking it up to figure out what to call it. A lot of recipes for these kinds of things. Lots of videos. Changed my life. Next time won't forget cheese.
It's getting called "A Scramble". I may never have another Omelette.

As a vegetarian I don?t go the fast food places so the last time I had French fries which I used to love was years back.
When I make them at home I never get them right.
But I'm inspired to try like maybe tonight.
Come to think of it I often have sliced spuds with my eggs if I cut them into long shapes they'd be French fries.
