It was still about 2 hours when I was in le Midi, often families all ate together at lunchtime.

I lived the last 30 years or so of my « active » life with a 50 minutes' break maximum. And I was one of those privileged b…ds aka as civil servants ;-)
What is definitely true is that dinner is way earlier in the UK for instance. And john is right in this respect.
