The LifePower unit I got is not cheap or light but it will charge my SL batteries on 3 hours of solar charging. This trip will be a trial. If it doesn't work or the airline takes it away from me, I will be using my cell phone which I can charge with a solar battery.

It would require different electronics (builtin power supply management silicon to do voltage conversion) or some other way of wiring compared to standard USB battery banks.

The iPhone batteries are only 3.8 volts. USB charging voltage is 5.0 volts, hence the SL can't charge from those, but many smaller devices can.
