[Leica] How did 50mm become the "normal" lens for 35mm cameras?

Oskar Barnack had a very limited number of lenses available for his skunkworks project.  He tried a zeiss 42 or 47 on prototype two but the Elmar design just came off patent and Max made it work Elmax at first
