IMHO, the most difficult assignments in photography are those that take you to iconic places or events, because it is so difficult to find something new to photograph and show, that has not been done a few million times before. Human interaction is certainly one way out, because of its innate unpredictability, but when an entire population gets used to posing in a certain way, and loses all spontaneity,  it becomes repetitive as well. It is definitely is very true of tourist dependant cultures, like for example the Masai in East Africa, and I suspect, the Cubans as well.
