Hi Nathan,
I’m quite agree with you, I use after years Silver Efex Pro 2 but I add very slow values, I don’t like at all the over processed pictures, but if you use it carefully, increasing blacks, whites, working a little bit with shadows I think you can improve some pictures, not all. I don’t use presets, I have my own presets and actually I adjust it manually, I usually put “Structure” maximum between 10 and 20, normally about 10 or something more. It is useful too for very slight toning, at least is what I do, However many times I compare the picture with Silver Efex Pro 2 and not and I keep the unprocessed one.
My advice is try it carefully, don’t exaggerate the values you put and I think you will like better the results
