A compromise over an email and phone call is a text message.
Unfortually people use it when you're meeting them for coffee or lunch at
noon  and you get a text message saying "I'm running a bit late." and arrive
at 12:40 not feeling like they even need to apologize.
But texting is a great "just the facts Mam" device. Most interactions don't
need a voice conversation or a disturbance just a few words you read on the
phone then you put it back in your pocket.
But people will assume if you're over 50 you should not text message them.
often they're right. I've not had my iPhone long (which apple replaces for
free in two days because of a swollen battery)  so I can text a bit now. I
don't wail on  the thing like I do say in this message.
