Management clearly didn't understand who their customers were. Their core strengths were large catalog of items available for delivery, automotive, tools broadly speaking, and appliances. They closed their catalog business just in time for the internet and Amazon. They didn't see what Home Depot could do with tools. They never found a way to leverage the good will they had with appliances. In automotive, management let a settlement over very aggressive muffler sales techniques kill their automotive business; completely missing the 10 minute oil change business or the dedicated tire and battery shops.
