My father-in-law just bought the Nikon 105 macro, the latest and greatest, but the APO still beats it, even if 31 years old in design. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Rabiner Sent: Tuesday, January 16, 2018 7:22 PM To: Leica Users Group Subject: Re: [Leica] Nikon lens to SL body adapter that is AF compatible 31 years ago, though is a very long time in camera years. That?s when the last version of the last Apo 100 macro Elmarit was designed and made. I think it?s thought of as 2 or 3 or 4 generations ago; whole ?classes? of glass ago. That?s just too long a time to compete with all that?s gone down in optics I think. I think if Leica comes out now with a 100 macro it?s going to be not in the same league as Nikon/Canon the price will reflect that. But not one them make 31 years ago. Nostalgia just doesn?t fit in there. It would be in all ways a premium product not the level Nikon/Canon is prepared to make. They?re just not going to work at that price point they?d rather sell more units. I?m ok with that. A grand in a half to me is not cheap I don?t need to not spend 6 grand an amount I may never see in the same place at the same time again. A Nikon macro has never been something to take lightly though it may have invented the standard non tele macro a 50 or 55mm and Nikon users invented the idea of using them for all around stuff. As your normal walking down the street standard lens. I?m into that. I shoot with macros all the time and often don?t get around to shooting closer than a meter with them. My Nikon 105 and 60mm macros from a decade back. I also have a 55 3.5 AI macro which is light, small and has a distinctive fingerprint. And is several decades back. I?d not use it for a macro job though. -- Mark William Rabiner Photographer On 1/16/18, 7:30 PM, "LUG on behalf of Mark Rabiner" <lug-bounces+mark=rabinergroup.com at leica-users.org on behalf of mark at rabinergroup.com> wrote: Based on looking at the specs it seem some R glass are a clear step up from old back then Nikon or Canon glass. But much of them even back then were not any kind of special inspiration. -- Mark William Rabiner Photographer On 1/16/18, 7:06 PM, "LUG on behalf of Aram" <lug-bounces+mark=rabinergroup.com at leica-users.org on behalf of leica_r8 at hotmail.com> wrote: Mark. Are you comparing R lenses with Nikon, canon, etc? Having shot with R and Canon and Nikon, that is not a good comparison. My R glass far outdoes any of my Nikon and Canon glass. Have you tried the 100/2.8 APO? Or the 35-70/4? A world of difference.
