With the traditional SLR, the lens remains wide open for viewing and focusing. Then it's stopped down only for the shot. Obviously for an SLR this makes viewing brighter (not an issue for a mirrorless TTL camera) and it also makes the DOF much narrower for easier focusing (may be an issue with the mirrorless models).
