Mainly because the group shot of all the Surrealists was done by him. With him conspicuously not in it. He being the one who shot it would be the excuse. And the idea being if he'd had a self timer he'd be in it. Turns out no. he had allegiance to the previous art movement the Dadaists. If you asked him he'd tell you.
