Structurally it is actually a TIFF with some extra instructions and there have long been different compression options for that format. When you import DNG's with Bridge or Lightroom (newer versions) lossless compression is applied in any case and there is no other option. That lossless compression is discrete from anything happening in camera anyway. Also there can be confusion because there are other export as lossy DNG options offered by Adobe too. Again that is completely separate from the in-camera processing and that lossless compression on import. For a concrete example, if you shoot a DNG in the new M (typ240) in camera you can set compression (which is always lossless) then Lightroom 5 you can use import as DNG in Lightroom 5 which will apply further lossless compression on import. You still have 14 BIT data (with all of the in-camera raw processing adjustments as always) Further to that your processing time on import is going to be affected by your hardware software version and also options such as what quality previews you want built on import too. DNG's have very small embedded previews in comparison to other raw formats.
